BAATARZORIG Batjargal I Батжаргалын Баатарзориг
In Baatarzorig’s Kunst steht der Verlust des kulturellen Erbes der Mongolei im Vordergrund, ausgelöst durch die Zerstörung herrschaftlicher Besitztümer und religiöser Artefakte in den 1930er Jahren, aber auch durch die rasante Kapitalisierung der 1990 Jahre. Er sammelt Holzschatullen, Metalldekorationen und andere Erbstücke nomadischer Familien. Diese werden zu Oberflächen seiner Bilder und zeigen sowohl Portraits mongolischer Aristokraten als auch zeitgenössischer Ikonen. So erinnert er nicht nur an in der Vergangenheit Zerstörtes, sondern stellt in der Gegenüberstellung kritische Fragen an gegenwärtige Entwicklungen in der mongolischen Gesellschaft.
Geb. 1983 in Ulaanbaatar, studierte Bildende Kunst an der Mongolischen Universität für Künste und Kultur, Ulaanbaatar Zahlreiche Ausstellungen UMA Art Gallery, 976 Art Gallery, Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolei Weitere Ausstellungen Bongsan Cultural Center, Südkorea; Satoshi Koyama Gallery Tokyo, Japan; Hong Kong, China sowie 2011 Nouveaux talents, Paris, Frankreich.
In his work artist Baatarzorig brings attention to preservation and loss of Mongolia’s cultural heritage during different historical transformation. His choice of media and subject addresses the concern that part of the country’s roots had been cut off during the period of repression in the 1930s on the one hand, and a capitalism and commodification after the 1990s on the other hand. Baatarzorig collects wooden chest cutouts and metal decorations, heirlooms of nomadic families, to use as the surfaces of his paintings. By painting faces of Mongolian aristocrats on those artifacts he preserves Mongolia’s heritage in two ways. Baatarzorig critically challenges the changes occurring during the transformation period, and ironically examines tensions between traditional culture and global consumerism juxtaposing contemporary icons with pieces from Mongolian history.
Born 1983 in Ulaanbaatar, he studied Fine Art at the Mongolian University of Arts and Culture in Ulaanbaatar. Numerous exhibitions at UMA Art Gallery & 976 Art Gallery & Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Other exhibitions at the Bongsan Cultural Center in Korea, Satoshi Koyama Gallery Tokyo in Japan, in Hong Kong China also 2011 Nouveaux talents in Paris, France.
